  • Profile

    Stephen Long (Ph.D. University of North Carolina, 2005) is associate professor of political science and global studies at the University of Richmond. His research focuses on the causes of war, rivalries, and victory and defeat in war. He is also interested in alliance politics and nuclear proliferation. He currently serves as a senior editor of the Oxford Research Encyclopedia of International Studies.

    Long teaches Introduction to International Relations (PLSC 250), American Foreign Policy (PLSC 350), International Security (PLSC 353), Understanding War (PLSC 400), Societies at War (GS 400), and Ethics in International Relations (FYS 100). He has received the Faculty Excellence Award (Center for Global Engagement), the Academic Advising Excellence Award (Academic Advising Resource Center), and was profiled in the Princeton Review’s 300 Best Professors (2012). Long has also taught on sabbaticals at the University of Konstanz, Germany, and Charles University, Prague, where he received the Golden Course Award.

    His advisees have been accepted to graduate programs at Harvard University (Kennedy School), Yale University (Jackson School), Tufts University (Fletcher School), Georgetown University (SFS), the London School of Economics, George Washington University (Elliott School), American University (SFS), Johns Hopkins University (SAIS), USC (Annenberg School), and many others. They have also won the Truman Scholarship, the Pickering Fellowship, and the Boren Scholarship.
